LG debuts T280 ultralight, X140, X200 netbooks

Well, it looks like MSI isn't the only company churning out new systems in advance of CeBIT -- LG has now also let out word of three new laptops and netbooks ahead of the big show. Leading the pack is the stylish, CULV-based T280 ultralight pictured above, which packs an 11.6-inch display, a choice of a 1.3GHz Pentium dual-core or Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB or 500GB hard drive, and a price ranging from $990 to $1,094. Joining it are the X140 and X200 netbooks, the latter of which actually looks to be identical to the X20 model we spotted at in the FCC's hands earlier this month. Both of those will pack 1.66GHz Atom N450 processors, along with some other seemingly similar specs, but fairly different designs. Dive into the links below for a closer look.

Acer Aspire One 532G first to feature NVIDIA Ion 2 switchable graphics

Well here's one we didn't expect to come out of MWC. Acer decided to throw some netbook news into its Liquid E press conference with the 10.1-inch Aspire One 532G -- the first netbook with NVIDIA's Ion 2. Not withstanding the addition of the HDMI port and HD display, the Pine Trail netbook has the same chassis as the previously reviewed 532h, but inside it's a whole different story -- its 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, GMA 3150 GPU graphics, 2GB of RAM and 320GB hard drive will be joined by a discrete NVIDIA GPU. As confirmed by the press release below, it will use NVIDIA's new Optimus automatic switching technology, though it appears Acer is holding out for NVIDIA to officially launch the platform at CeBit to reveal details of the GPU -- but a GeForce G310 seems likely from the rumors. The high-def capable netbook should be available in March, but we'll be listening for a price and more news on this one. In the meantime, hit the break for a relaxing hands-on video and the full PR.

Mac OS X 10.3 installed on Nokia N900 via PearPC, barely usable for impatient geeks

Curious folks around the world enjoy a bit of hackintosh every now and then (although once is enough for many), but no geek has successfully ventured as far as Toni Nikkanen of Finland, who became the first person to run OS X on a phone -- the Nokia N900. As you can see in the video after the break, Toni's hack relies on PearPC -- a PowerPC emulator -- to install good ol' OS X 10.3 (Panther), but the mammoth sluggishness means it's far from usable. Still, if you can spare 90 minutes for each boot-up plus plenty more for the snail-paced cursor, then head to the source to learn from Herra Nikkanen.

Wii Classic Controller Pro coming to confused, oversized US living rooms in April

After doing the whole "Nintendo" thing in Japan, Nintendo has brought its Wii Classic Controller Pro Stateside to ensure us Americans were being properly Nintend'd to. That's right, yet another control mechanism, with its own set of slightly different buttons (this time dual shoulder buttons) and ergonomics (some DualShock-style grips) to thoroughly confuse and delight hapless Wii owners. Interestingly, the controller is making its debut in April as a bundle with Monster Hunter Tri; the game is compatible with the tried and true Wii Remote + Nunchuck combo and the hardly relevant Classic Controller, but we have a feeling those extra, Professional shoulder buttons will come in handy when plying the game mechanics of monster hunting. Separately the controller comes in black or white for $20, while bundled the game and controller will retail for $60. Our dignity as a once-proud Wii owner? Hardly worth a Craigslist listing.

Advan GT65: Memikat bagi yang Cekak

Meski notebook ringan jadi tren namun tak semua orang membutuhkan komputer yang selalu dijinjing ke mana-mana. Segmen ini biasanya membutuhkan notebook sebagai pengganti desktop untuk bekerja di meja dan lebih mementingkan kinerja serta harga dibandingkan desain yang manis. Kebutuhan inilah yang membuat notebook dengan layar besar dan bobot yang cukup berat tetap eksis, khususnya di tengah gempuran model kecil-ringan yang banyak dipromosikan vendor. Advan pun memerbarui model mereka untuk kelas ini, salah satunya lewat seri GT65.
Tak ada hal yang menarik dari desain GT65 karena bentuknya memang cenderung datar meski lapisan luar cover memakai bahan glossy yang mulus. Notebook dengan layar 14,1” ini juga cukup berat (2,5 kg) dan jelas tidak nyaman dibawa bepergian. Hal menarik muncul pada bagian keyboard di mana tombol-tombolnya tampak besar dan melebihi ukuran keyboard standar sehingga nyaman ditekan. Satu lagi kelebihan produk ini terletak pada penggunaan layar dengan pencahayaan LED yang membuat tampilan lebih cemerlang. Layar berlampu LED agaknya mulai banyak dimanfaatkan vendor sebagai keunggulan notebook mereka.
Faktor kinerja tampaknya juga lebih diutamakan pada GT65. Ini terbukti dengan penggunaan prosesor Intel T6570 2,1GHz dan harddisk berkapasitas 250 GB yang cukup lega. Namun penggunaan chipset SiS M672/968 kami duga tak akan mengoptimalkan kinerja notebook ini.
Seperti diketahui, sebagian chipset SiS memiliki kinerja yang lebih rendah dibandingkan chip Intel meskipun harganya memang lebih murah. Dukungan chip grafis di GT65 juga mengandalkan SiS Mirage 3 yang setara dengan VIA Chrome 9 dibandingkan dengan GM965 (X3100) atau GL40 (X4500) dari Intel.
Advan tampaknya memangkas kelengkapan pada GT65 mungkin karena ingin menekan harga jualnya. Pada notebook ini tak ditemui slot Express Card dan juga port FireWire, fungsi Bluetooth, dan juga hilangnya fasilitas modem dial-up layaknya ciri khas jajaran produk Advan.

Jika disimpulkan, Advan GT65 merupakan notebook pengganti PC dengan dukungan mobilitas lebih baik. Kekurangan fasilitas di sana-sini menjadi faktor yang tidak kami sukai. Namun harganya yang terjangkau (Rp4,9 juta) jelas sangat memikat bagi mereka yang berkantong cekak. Notebook ini memang lebih ideal bagi mereka yang mementingkan aktivitas office dan Internet semata. Dengan demikian, game 3D tidak termasuk dalam daftar yang diperhitungkan di sini mengingat kemampuan olah grafis produk ini kurang memuaskan. Namun produk ini sudah cukup memadai untuk memainkan game sederhana yang tidak berat. Anda yang lebih berkonsentrasi pada pekerjaan pasti akan merasa cocok dengan kinerja-harga yang menarik pada Advan GT65 ini. (Deny Prasetyo)

Asus UX30 : Kembaran Macbook Air

Pertama melihat Asus UX30, kami langsung teringat dengan Macbook Air. Pasalnya, banyak kesamaan di antara keduanya. Bentuk tombol chiclet, touchpad besar, dan desain yang begitu ramping adalah kesamaan utama keduanya. Bobot Asus UX30 pun hanya sekitar 1,45 kg, hanya terpaut sedikit dari bobot MacBook Air yang sekitar 1,36 kg.
Namun jika dibanding MacBook Air, Asus UX30 memiliki koneksi yang lebih lengkap. Jika membuka penutup port di sisi kiri dan kanan, Anda akan menemukan colokan HDMI, Ethernet, card reader, 3 port USB, dan mini Display Port. Lho, tidak ada VGA Out? Sebenarnya ada, cuma harus melalui converter khusus yang dihubungkan ke Display Port. Converter tersebut sudah disediakan dalam paket penjualan, namun berarti Anda harus memastikan converter tersebut tidak tertinggal jika ingin melakukan presentasi.
Kelemahan lain yang agak mengganggu adalah baterai notebook ini terintegrasi alias tidak bisa dicopot. Ini agak menyulitkan karena Anda berarti tidak bisa mengganti baterai tersebut sewaktu-waktu atau menggunakan baterai cadangan. Padahal dengan kapasitas baterai 3250 mAh, notebook ini kurang memiliki nafas panjang. Saat kami uji, notebook ini cuma bertahan dua jam untuk memutar video HD dan menjalankan Battery Eater mode Classic.
Namun untuk performa, notebook ini layak diacungi jempol. Berbekal prosesor Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 dan memori 4GB, performa notebook ini hanya kalah dari Vaio VGN-TT25GN.



Kesimpulan
Sejak pertama, kami sudah terpikat dengan desain Asus UX30 yang keren dan modern. Meski tidak orisinal, notebook ini pasti akan membuat Anda terlihat lebih gaya. Performanya pun cukup bagus, meski daya tahan dalam mode baterai agak mengecewakan. Harga Asus UX30 sendiri sekitar US$ 989 tanpa sistem operasi, jadi sedikit lebih tinggi dibanding notebook tipis lain. (Wisnu Nugroho)

ASUS UL80JT spotted with automatic switchable graphics, brags 12 hour battery life

How we missed this at the ASUS booth is beyond us, but leave it to the eagle-eyes at Ars to hone in on the ASUS UL80JT with an overclockable Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce 310 graphics. So it's just a run-of-the-mill gaming rig, right? Wrong. The 14-inch laptop has switchable graphics like we have never seen before; the laptop
automatically switches, "second-by-second" between the NVIDIA card and the integrated Intel one, instead of the "standard" switchable graphics we've seen on laptops like the MacBook Pro 15 or ASUS UL80Vt which require users to switch manually. The major foreseeable benefit of this is longer battery life even when the system is using the discrete card, and ASUS touts 12 hours with the automatic solution turned on. No word on price or availability, but we're guessing ASUS will have more details soon and that we'll start seeing this this in more and more laptops as NVIDIA spreads the love around to the rest of the industry.

BenQ Joybook S35: Telah Berbekal Windows 7

Secara fisik, BenQ Joybook S35 ini seperti versi besar dari netbook BenQ, Joybook S101. Ini bisa dilihat dari penggunaan bahan piano glossy berwarna biru dengan tulisan BenQ Joybook di bagian punggungnya. Penggunaan material glossy tersebut membuat penampilan notebook ini terlihat modern, meski harus dikompensasi dengan mudahnya sidik jari menempel di permukaan ini.
Sebagai notebook, fisik Joybook S35 terlihat sedikit lebih lebar. Tebal notebook ini sendiri berkisar di angka 1,3 cm (di sisi depan) sampai 2,9 cm (di sisi belakang). Jadi secara tebal, notebook ini tidak berhasil mencapai angka “keramat” 1 inci. Namun hitung-hitungan itu sejujurnya tidak bisa melunturkan citra Joybook S35 sebagai notebook tipis, karena sekilas ia terlihat sangat ramping. Apalagi, bobotnya cuma 1,6 kg.
Seluruh fasilitas BenQ S35 disusun di sisi kiri dan kanan, meliputi slot memori, VGA-Out, USB (3 buah), HDMI, dan eSATA. Fasilitas terakhir ini layak digarisbawahi karena tidak ada di notebook tipis lain. Namun seperti notebook tipis umumnya, tidak ada perangkat optik maupun slot ekspansi PCMCIA/Express Card. Notebook ini juga tidak memiliki Bluetooth.
Di sisi interior, BenQ tidak banyak melakukan perombakan. Tombol keyboard-nya praktis sama seperti notebook BenQ pada umumnya, tidak mengikuti bergaya chiclet yang sedang trendi itu. Namun kami menyukai touchpad-nya yang dibuat bertekstur sehingga terasa responsif.
Seperti notebook tipis lain, notebook berlayar 13,3 inci menggunakan prosesor Intel Core 2 Solo SU 3500 dan chipset Intel Mobile GS45. Kapasitas memorinya besar (4GB), namun kapasitas harddisknya terbilang kecil (250GB) jika dibanding Asus maupun Acer. Hasil pengujian Joybook S35 terlihat bersaing dengan Asus UX30 sebagai yang terbaik, namun perlu dicatat kalau notebook ini menggunakan Windows 7 sehingga tidak pas jika dibandingkan secara apple-to-apple. Kesimpulan
Kami belum mendapat harga resmi BenQ Joybook S35 dengan spesifikasi seperti yang kami uji, sehingga agak sulit menilai kinerja notebook ini secara keseluruhan. Namun menurut Galva Techologies sebagai distributor BenQ, Joybook S35 akan dijual mulai harga US$ 699 lengkap dengan Windows 7 Starter Edition. Dari hitung-hitungan di atas kertas tersebut, BenQ S35 adalah pilihan yang sangat layak dilirik.

Axioo Zetta MMT : Si Ramping Nan Menawan

Sebenarnya kami berencana menguji Axioo Zetta MMT 2 yang telah menggunakan prosesor Intel Centrino 2. Namun karena produk tersebut baru hadir di awal November, akhirnya kami menguji Axioo Zetta MMT versi pertama yang masih menggunakan Intel Pentium SU2700 (1,3GHz).
Dari seluruh jajaran notebooknya, Zetta MMT adalah notebook tertipis yang pernah dibuat oleh Axioo. Bahkan menurut kami, si perancang notebook bukan semata ingin menonjolkan bentuk yang tipis, tetapi juga seakan mau memperlihatkan betapa stylish-nya notebook ini.
Ini terlihat dari tebal total badan notebook yang cuma 2cm. Mungkin Anda akan lebih terkejut saat membuka layarnya. Sebab Axioo Zetta MMT ini memiliki tebal layar yang cukup langsing, hanya 0,5 cm saja. Meski sangat ramping, layar tipis berukuran 13,3 inci dengan format lebar ini tetap enak dipandang, terutama saat notebook digunakan untuk memutar film berdefinisi tinggi. Ini berkat layar TFT LCD dengan resolusi 1366 x 768 dengan rasio aspek 16:9.
Bicara soal multimedia, notebook yang satu ini cukup bisa diandalkan. Meskipun suara yang dihasilkan terbilang pas-pasan, namun ketersediaan koneksi HDMI bisa menghibur Anda yang sering memutar fim berdefnisi tinggi.
Meski demikian, tipisnya notebook ini ternyata harus dikompensasi dengan beragam kelemahan. Mirip Asus UX30, konektor VGA , USB dan LAN di notebook ini harus ditiadakan. Sebagai gantinya diberikan sebuah jack miniport replicator untuk menancapkan konverter khusus yang menyediakan ketiga jenis port tadi. Jadi, pastikan Anda tidak lupa membawa konverter ini saat akan melakukan presentasi di depan klien bisnis lewat proyektor. Koneksi adaptor untuk daya pun ditancapkan lewat port yang sama dengan dengan konverter tambahan tadi. Untungnya di konverter tersebut sudah tersedia jack miniport tambahan untuk menyambungkan adaptor daya secara paralel ketika dibutuhkan.

Kesimpulan

Axioo Zetta MMT terasa nyaman untuk dimasukkan ke dalam tas atau dipangku dalam jangka waktu lama karena tidak terlalu terasa panas. Dari sisi performa pun notebook ini bisa jadi andalan, utamanya buat Anda yang sering berurusan dengan file-file multimedia yang butuh sumber daya besar. Hanya saja, Anda perlu memperhatikan beberapa keterbatasan notebook, seperti bobotnya yang terbilang berat serta perlunya membawa-bawa konverter khusus jika ingin menyambungkan perangkat USB, jaringan, atau perangkat VGA eksternal. Quantel SX10: Lebih Ramping dan Lega

Tubuh SX10 hanya setebal 27.8 mm, tampak lebih singset. Seri ini juga memiliki perubahan tata letak beberapa port di bodinya yang ramping itu. Sayangnya, perancangan ulang bodinya ini berefek hilangnya satu buah port USB sehingga sekarang hanya tersedia 2 USB port saja. Sebagai gantinya, SX10 menyediakan modem internal dengan dukungan 3G/HSDPA dengan slot SIM berada di balik baterai.
SX10 tetap menggunakan Intel Atom N270 dan Intel GMA950 (untuk menangani urusan grafisnya). Kabarnya, ada varian SX10 yang menggunakan Intel Atom N280. Meskipun masih menggunakan spesifikasi yang sama dengan pabrikan lain, SX10 menyediakan HDD berkapasitas 250 GB (bahkan tersedia varian lain kapsitas HDD 320 GB, yang merupakan kapasitas terbesar untuk netbook saat ini).
Jika membandingkan kinerja netbook berbasis Intel Atom N270 satu sama lain, hasilnya amat bermiripan. Karena itu, perbedannya hanya terletak pada faktor fasilitas dan desain, di samping tentu saja harga. Di sinilah Quantel hadir dengan SX10-nya. (Karuna - kontributor)

Zyrex SKY 1812: Estetika vs Daya Guna

Zyrex Sky 1812 ini pada dasarnya adalah adik dari Sky 2712 yang kami uji bulan lalu. Bedanya, Sky 1812 adalah netbook 10 inci yang menggunakan prosesor Intel Atom, sementara Sky 2712 adalah notebook 11,6 inci yang ultra tipis dan menggunakan Intel CULV.
Selain itu, hanya warna yang membedakan keduanya. Secara desain, keduanya sangat mirip: tipis, ringan, dan terlihat gaya. Jika dihitung, Sky 1812 ini memiliki ketebalan 2,5 cm (pada keadaan tertutup) dengan bobot 1,06 kg saja. Ditambah kombinasi warna putih dan merah marun, netbook ini memang terlihat cantik.
Kami pun menyukai desain keyboard-nya terasa nyaman. Ukuran tombol sebenarnya tidak besar (sekitar 14x13 mm), namun memiliki jarak antar tombol sekitar 4 mm. Tiap tombol juga terasa empuk saat ditekan sehingga memudahkan kami mengetik dengan cepat. Satu-satunya hal yang menyulitkan adalah penempatan tombol Fn di sisi bawah paling kanan; tempat yang biasanya menjadi posisi tombol Ctrl.
Sedangkan di sisi mesin, Zyrex 1812 ini sudah menggunakan Intel Atom N280 yang memiliki kecepatan 1,66GHz. Ini sedikit lebih baik dari kebanyakan netbook yang masih menggunakan Atom N270 berkecepatan 1,6 GHz. Kerja prosesor tersebut dibantu memori DDR2-800 1GB dan harddisk SATA 120GB. Kombinasi ini menghasilkan performa yang bagus, termasuk ketika dibandingkan dengan netbook sekelas seperti Gigabyte Book Top M1022.
Soal fasilitas, netbook ini tampil biasa saja. Fasilitas standar ala netbook sudah tersedia, seperti WiFi, slot memori, webcam, ethernet, VGA Out, serta USB. Namun tiga fasilitas terakhir dengan catatan khusus; dan mungkin di sinilah konsekuensi terbesar dari desain super tipis netbook ini. Pasalnya, port Ethernet dan VGA Out harus menggunakan konektor khusus yang terhubung ke sebuah port khusus di sisi belakang netbook. Jadi jika konektor tersebut rusak atau tertinggal di rumah, sudah terbayang repotnya. Kerepotan lain adalah saat Anda ingin memasang flashdisk, karena port USB di netbook ini hanya dua buah dan itu pun berada di sisi belakang netbook.
Desain tipis juga mengharuskan netbook ini menggunakan baterai berukuran 3400 mAh, sedikit di bawah netbook sekelas yang biasanya memiliki kapasitas 4400 mAh ke atas. Ini berefek pada daya tahan baterai. Ketika digunakan untuk memutar video HD, netbook ini hanya mencapai durasi 2 jam 43 menit. Karena netbook lain rata-rata mencapai angka 3 jam, nafas Zyres 1812 memang tergolong pendek.

Sebagai produk yang berkaitan dengan gaya hidup, netbook memang harus tampil cantik. Itulah hal yang coba dikejar Zyrex melalui Sky 1812 ini, dan kami pikir mereka sukses melakukannya. Sayang hal itu harus dibayar dengan kerepotan dan keminiman dari sisi fasilitas. Dell's Inspiron Zino HD on sale now in America: starts at $229, doubles as an HTPC

Dell has taken its sweet time in bringing the 7.75- x 7.75- x 3.5-inch Inspiron Zino HD to market, but just 24 hours after it made its market debut across the pond, this little zinger is finally available to the Yanks in attendance. Starting at just $229, the mini PC is far more exhilarating than most ho hum nettops. Oh sure, the base configuration is fairly unexciting, but thankfully Dell enables you to add up to 8GB of memory, a 1.8GHz dual-core AMD Athlon Neo X2 6850e CPU, up to 1TB of HDD space, an optional Blu-ray drive, a 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4330 discrete GPU and WiFi to the mix. 'Course, speccing it out will obviously raise the price substantially, but it's always nice to see more power than anticipated within such a minuscule box. Of note, Dell also mentions that an optional TV tuner, wireless keyboard and mouse are available, but at least for now, the TV tuner is nowhere to be found in the configuration pages. Other inclusions are a 4-in-1 card reader, four USB 2.0 sockets and a pair of eSATA ports. Who says HTPCs have to breathe fire?

Update: We've just heard that the TV tuner won't be available at launch (sounds a lot like what happened with the Mini 10), so there goes those dreams of immediately gratifying your urge for a new HTPC of the smallest scale.

Foxconn distracts all with TXM-355 bamboo desktop chassis, brews bamboo tablet rumor

Look, we've all been giving Foxconn a bit of a hard time recently with all those Apple tablet and iPhone rumors, so it's only fair for the Taiwanese giant to take some time off for something fresh. What we have here are a couple of self-proclaimed "world's first" desktop chassis with bamboo front cover (so we guess that Dell Studio Hybrid doesn't count to them), aiming to achieve environmentally-friendly status in China. While Foxconn's Bamboo Forest 1 ATX case on the right has been announced for about a month, the TXM-355 or Bamboo Forest 2 microATX case on the left is fresh from the oven -- visually already a good candidate for your next HTPC build. Despite a few rough cuts and the ugly glue work on the optical drive flap, PCPOP has given the smaller brother a thumbs up overall. Not bad for ￥368 ($54) either, and it's only an extra $2 for the big daddy. Just watch out for that panda behind you.
